It's going to be a very mellow Fourth here. There's a soccer game in Utah that needs Mike's attention, so it's "just" the eight of us here at home. As my mother frequently reminds me, we are an instant party. And I will try today to make it so. The kids saw fireworks last night, so tonight, the plan is for an indoor picnic in front of the big screen, watching A Capitol Fourth. Seems kind of wimpy when we are within driving distance of the real thing, but I just don't have that in me.
Every year, I make a flag cake. This year, it struck me as rather silly. I'm allergic to flour. I make the cake and I always have hives by evening, without even eating it. So, this year, I pressed vanilla ice cream into an 11x14 pan, decorated the top with appropriate berries and whipped cream. Tah-dah!
Imagine how it would look if one of my children had put it in the freezer carefully, on a flat shelf, instead of at an angle (the whole thing sort of slid and some of the berries got buried). Oh well, you get the idea, and it will taste fine.

This looks pretty good to me.I think that is a great idea.We watched fireworks over our lake. It was nice and Kelly is here this week.I still miss your instant party.

Lovely cake! Ice cream cake is just as good in our house!
Our 4th was so different this year, but nice. I hope the "instant party" was fun!

You mention being allergic to flour - are you also allergic to gluten?
