Lord, Hear Our Prayer

The internet is a formidable force for bringing the comfort and consolation and hope of the Lord to all of us. It can be an incredibily powerful medium for community. There is an unfathomable resource for prayer here. We have on the 'net the privilege of praying for people and of being witness to the miracles brought forth when fervent, faith-filled people pray for one another.

Let's be that community of hope and faith for one another.

How about this idea? What if I pop in here every week, share Sunday's gospel and talk a wee bit about how we can live it and pray it in our homes? And then you tell me how we can pray for you that week? Deal?

{And please, do return and let us know how prayer is bearing fruit.}

Luke 21:5-19

While some people were speaking about
how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings,
Jesus said, "All that you see here–
the days will come when there will not be left
a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down."

Then they asked him,
"Teacher, when will this happen?
And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?"
He answered,
"See that you not be deceived,
for many will come in my name, saying,
'I am he,’ and 'The time has come.’
Do not follow them!
When you hear of wars and insurrections,
do not be terrified; for such things must happen first,
but it will not immediately be the end."
Then he said to them,
"Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues
from place to place;
and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.

"Before all this happens, however,
they will seize and persecute you,
they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,
and they will have you led before kings and governors
because of my name.
It will lead to your giving testimony.
Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,
for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking
that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute.
You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends,
and they will put some of you to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.
By your perseverance you will secure your lives."

In ideologies there is not Jesus: in his tenderness, his love, his meekness. And ideologies are rigid, always. Of every sign: rigid. And when a Christian become a disciple of ideology, he has lost the faith: he is no longer a disciple of Jesus, he is a disciple of this attitude of thought…For this reason Jesus said to them: "You have taken away the key of knowledge." The knowledge of Jesus is transformed into an ideological and also moralistic knowledge, because these close the door with many requirements. The faith becomes ideology and ideology frightens, ideology chases away the people, distances, distances the people and distances of the Church of the people. ~Pope Francis. more here.

Dear Lord, Please give us Grace, first: never to stop praying to never lose the faith; to remain humble, and so not to become closed, which closes the way to the Lord.
Open the door today. Cast aside all your "requirements" for genuine friendship and open the door to someone outside your comfort zone.
How can I pray for you this week?

  1. Marla Lynch says

I love this, because I have always found that befriending somebody outside of my “comfort zone” is so very fruitful. These friends have brought me comfort. They have brought me joy. They have given me new insights. They have accepted me unconditionally, in spite of our differences.
And please know that I will pray for Shawn.
    God bless you!

  2. Siobhan says

Praying for Shawn. Please keep my friend Cindy in your prayers. She has been battling breast cancer for several years with separate re-occurrences in he spine and liver. She is going in for an MRI this morning to rule out if it has traveled to her brain. Cindy is a beautiful faith filled woman who is carrying this with a great deal of grace. Pray for a miracle.

  3. Elizabeth KP says

I will pray for Shawn – it’s good for you to post his info. Thanks. May I ask you to include my oldest son, James, in your prayers? He has applied to ONE college (he only wants to attend THAT one school) and so we are asking prayers that this work out for him (he has been home schooled from day 1). And in a bigger sense, James needs your prayers to assist him in his ability to spend his days productively, not to squander on the computer with “friends” on Skype etc. I am urgently requesting these prayers. I am at a loss, and my husband really wants us to step back and simply encourage him to make wise choices (I am micro-managing…). This is difficult for me. Thank you, Elizabeth!

  4. Karen says

Praying for my husband who is getting his 8th chemo treatment for stage 3 colon cancer and that his platelets don’t keep dropping so he can continue treatment. Praying mightily for this strong man brought low by this vicious disease and praying for my sons as they watch the father they love suffering.

  5. Amanda says

Praying for Shawn. Praying to give up wanting to control what I cannot, and instead bathe in the present moment, which is the only thing certain anyway.

  6. says

Praying for Shawn, and for all of these intentions, especially for Karen’s husband as I add my own: for my friend Celine, mother of five, who is also battling stage 3 colon cancer. 4 rounds of chemo down, 8 to go. I also pray in thanksgiving and for blessing for my chemo baby, Stephen, who turns one tomorrow. He was born when I was 4 down, 8 to go for Hodgkins, and he is every inch a miracle.
