Daybook for the Heart of my Home: March Feast Week

***
Outside My Window ...
It is cold and damp. On my way to the car this morning, I noticed that all sorts of things are bursting through the ground--perennial buds and plenty of weeds. It will be time for some serious dirt digging very soon.

***
I am listening to...
the incessant chatter of Katie and Karoline. These little girls talk all day long (and in their sleep:-).
***
To Live the Liturgy...
We will celebrate St. Patrick tomorrow with stories and games and homemade Shamrock shakes and white chocolate mint Oreos. The children are looking forward to Jennifer Mackintosh's trinity craft. On Thursday, we'll celebrate St. Joseph. I plan to create a St. Joseph's altar this year. And the Pasta Bolognese and "bisque tortoni" will be back by popular demand.

I'm feeling the need to be ever more silent as the second half of Lent begins. I reviewed my resolutions and I recognize that I will need to be more dependent and obedient in order to bring those good things to our Lord.
***
To Breathe Deeply...
The exercise routine was derailed on Saturday when I slipped down the stairs. I've managed to pull some key muscles. Yes, I was carrying the baby. Thank God, she's just fine. I managed to completely protect her while calling upon muscles I didn't even know I had. I had planned to pull up the carpet on the steps this spring and have the wood underneath refinished. The carpet gets so much use that it's nasty and I'm sure we'll never be able to keep new carpet clean either. But, I can't imagine that fall on bare wood, so now I'm re-thinking.

***
I am thankful for ...
the example of holy women.
***
From the kitchen ...
I think I'm addicted to kombucha. My local Bloom carries it now, which makes it way too easy to obtain.Bloom is across the parking lot from Starbucks. So, when I go to get a fix, I'm faced with a nutritional decision: sugar and caffeine or fermented probiotics. Price is the same. Both are ridiculously expensive.Last year, I tried to make kombucha. The first batch was great. The second batch was a rather frightening mold soup. I'm working up the courage to try again, because, as I said, I'm addicted and it sure ain't cheap.

***
I am wearing ...
jeans that are too big, an Around the Horn hoodie, my hair up in a clip.
***
I am creating ...
a blog post. Seriously, my blog is my creativity outlet lately and that suits me fine for the time being. I'm not starting any more "projects" until I get through the spring cleaning list.
***
  On my iPod...
George Winston Gulf Coast Blues.
***
Towards a real education ...
I spent every spare moment this weekend restoring order to our learning room. I'm feeling a bit like Michele these days. I need a new springtime in our home education endeavor. Unlike times past, I'm not inclined to really write much about it. I homeschool from the very heart of my being. And I have grown rather protective of my heart in this regard. I know that for me, the first steps towards fresh perspective is the environment. Once I "put my house in order," literally, the rest usually follows nicely, as long as I listen for God's guidance. The learning environment can inspire me as well as it inspires the children.
***
Bringing beauty to my home ...
I put fresh flowers on the grocery list. And, truly, I think "clean" is beautiful and I'm trying to stay very focused on clean:-).

Katie has nearly memorized the rose catalog. We will be planting roses very, very soon. Then, I will have lots of blooms to bring inside.

With Christian:
Before I Go: Letters to My Children About What Really Matters

With Patrick:
Yes or no?

With the others:
St. Patrick's Summer

For me:
The Gift of Faith, recommended on Faith and Family Live! This book very well may be the best book on faith I've ever read (I'm not finished yet). It's written simply enough to be readable even in translation. It incorporates Scripture, sacrament, Tradition, and the wisdom of the saints to offer a fresh perspective on the spiritual life. I started it during Advent and then lost the book. It "just appeared" on the theology shelf in my library closet yesterday when I was looking for something else. Perfect timing for Lent!

***
I am hoping ...
that the fact that both the washer and the dryer are in need of repair isn't too monumental. Laundry is multiplying like rabbits in the spring and it's not pretty.
***
Around the house ...
the goal is to maintain our newly found sense of peace and order (still). This is the intention I bring to St.Anne every morning. She is such a faithful intercessor. So far, I'm sticking to the Spring Cleaning plan. I recognize that every room isn't going to be perfect (or even close) but it IS going to be better than it is now. I know God blesses the effort and I pray I can do this cheerfully.
***
One of my favorite things ...
The NCAA basketball tournament. I love Bracketology (can we give a lab science credit for this?). I love incessant college basketball games. But most of all, I love that it's a CBS production and not an ESPN one. Mike will be home. Soon. Very, very soon. And that's my favorite thing in a big way.
***
A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
doctor for Christian, St. Patrick fun (Mary Beth is in charge and will guest post tomorrow), St. Joseph's Day, lots of soccer this weekend, much more spring cleaning.

Nicholas has spent a lot of time on the road with Mike in the past few weeks, thoroughly soaking in the atmosphere of NCAA basketball. Here he is a few hours before the Patriot League Championship. One of American University's players stood and rebounded for him for a long while. Rumor has it, Nicky put on quite a show and drained quite few three-pointers on that big boy hoop.

The "Plan" Part of Planning for a Peaceful Home

In prior columns, I’ve explored the ideas of a morning offering andof time set aside to listen and hear God. Now, for the “plan” part of the plan for a peaceful home.

We begin by offering the day to the Lord, opening ourselves to the grace He freely offers and ensuring that even our failures are redemptive. Then, during a time of spiritual reading and meditation, we listen to Him, and we resolve to do whatever He tells us to do that day. Usually, I write this resolution in a little notebook, where I can refer to it and remind myself of it throughout the day. The resolution fits within the context of my daily life, my work in the world, my vocation in the home. And it’s that “daily life” component that needs a clear direction.Read the rest here.

And then c'mon back and tell me your best planning tips in the comment box.

March Madness: My Heart's at Home Daybook

***
Outside My Window ...
It promises to be a beautiful day. The weather will be just perfect for hanging out diapers. I'm rather looking forward to it. I still love diapers. Really, I do.

***
I am listening to...
the spin cycle of the washer. Mount Never-rest, indeed.
***
To Live the Liturgy...
We are settling into a new quiet time routine. I'm trying to have everyone old enough to write acquire a habit of reading, prayer, and resolution. Personally, this has been the single most productive habit I've cultivated ever.
***
To Breathe Deeply...
I've been faithful to the workouts, but I am so looking forward to adding walks outside this week. It's time for Sarah Anne to experience the joy of a stroller ride on a fresh, nearly-spring day.

Towards rhythm and beauty ...
the settling into Daylight Savings Time wasn't so bad at all. The little girls went to bed early last night and so did the little boys. The teenagers never sleep when we do and always sleep when we don't anyway.

***
I am thankful for ...
Spring Break. It's nice to have Michael home. I'm sure we'll enjoy it even more when he awakens.
***
From the kitchen ...
it's grocery day today. It's amazing how the warmer weather affects my meal planning. There are lots of lighter fruits and veggies on my list and suddenly the morning smoothie doesn't make us all shiver.

***
I am wearing ...
a new denim skirt, a t-shirt, and shoes made of trash.
***
I am creating ...
a storage box. My first project from Anna Maria Horner's new book.
***
  On my iPod...
David Nevue. I've been spending my meditation time at Ann's blog these days. Serendipitously, I found that Sarah Anne relaxes beautifully to the piano there. So I claimed some relaxation for my baby and myself.
***
Towards a real education ...
Colleen and I are putting the finishing touches on plans for the Native American unit. I sat down yesterday and sketched out daily plans in all subjects for my children from now until Easter. It's nice to have it all on paper. Give us a few more days to dot the i's and cross the t's and then we'll share our notes with you.

Bringing beauty to my home ...
it's time to force blooms and bring some spring inside.

weather warm enough to call the children outside to play~ and then children who come inside, spent and happy and in need of a good bath before falling fast asleep.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
The little boys are going to Richmond to cheer for GMU in the CAA finals tonight.Mike's directing the game for ESPN. Then, he's doing another conference final on Wednesday and another on Friday--probably with a couple of kids or more in tow. Christian has to stay in town tonight. He's the coach of Mary Beth's team and they are playing in the 5/6 grade girls championship game. I haven't seen her play all year, but I think I'll leave our cloister and stand by myself in the gym long enough to watch the first half.

Snow Day!: My Heart's at Home Daybook

***
Outside My Window ...
It's a snow day! There are about seven inches of snow on the ground and it's still falling. It's very, very cold, so I think there will be much in-and-outing today.

***
I am listening to...
shovels scraping, children yelling, the dog barking, squeals of delight. I'm so, so glad for snow at last.
***
To Live the Liturgy...
Monday will be about reminding the children of Lenten resolutions after the Sunday "mini-Easter." I think that sometimes it's better to find some other way to make Sunday special and to maintain the Lenten resolutions throughout all of Lent.
***
To Breathe Deeply...
More T-Tapp Basic workout and the Walking Workout. It was great to get out on Friday and to walk with baby in the front pack. It's going to be cold in the early part of the week but I'm hoping to squeeze in more and more outside walking-with-baby time as the spring approaches.

Towards rhythm and beauty ...
Lent has a rhythm of its own and there is beauty in the sobriety of the season.

***
I am thankful for ...
a chance to start anew on Monday mornings.
***
From the kitchen ...
Hot cinnamon tea and prayers for the gentle woman who introduced me to this particular blend.

***
I am wearing ...
black knit pants, a white tee shirt with a gray cardigan. Fuzzy socks.
***
I am creating ...
a Lenten prayer corner--still.
***
  On my iPod...
Hail Mary, Gentle Woman. Ever since it came up on this thread (and this and this), I've been listening every morning, in order to get the song stuck in my head for the rest of the day, and so to inspire gentleness in myself.
***

Towards a real education ...
I have nearly finished the booklists through the end of the academic year. Colleen and I had a big brainstorm this weekend and are re-energized. Good thing, too, because it's not long until her wee one arrives.
Today, it's a snow day. I'm not even going to try to stick to the academic plan. We'll snuggle up and read books when they're tuckered out from the snow play.
***
Bringing beauty to my home ...
I am inspired by my friend Megan, who hosted us for tea last weekend. I'd like to set up a little tea table. I know it will be temporary--Karoline is just now old enough not to wreck it (I think) and Sarah Anne is too little to be a threat. We might have a season to enjoy it.

The plan for this week is to stick to the plan: the meal plan, the lesson plan, the housekeeping plan, the workout plan. In order to do that, I plan to stick closely to the prayer plan.
I think this is the plan for all of Lent. Hopefully, by Easter it will all be a habit.

Beginning Lent: My Heart's at Home Daybook

***
Outside My Window ...
It's bright and beautiful but very cold.

***
I am listening to...
Mike and Karoline watching Little Einsteins and eating breakfast in bed. Somebody will have to break it to them soon that it's Monday.
***
To Live the Liturgy...
Big week! We'll celebrate Shrove Tuesday with waffles and lots of whipped cream for dinner and King Cake for tea time. Tomorrow will be devoted to some serious reflection on Lent and what it holds for us. Ash Wednesday is for Mass and ashes. I'm certain my children will tune into Around the Horn at 5 eastern time on ESPN--they love to see that Tony Reali, the host, wears his ashes on the air. On Wednesday, we'll hide the "Alleluia" mantel letters and make firm our Lenten resolutions. We'll also begin our new prayer routine (more on that tomorrow if Sarah Anne allows me time).
***
To Breathe Deeply...
Several people asked about my workout. I've been doing the T-Tapp Basic workout, which was just perfect coming off bedrest and a c-section. This week, I'm planning on alternating the Basic Workout with the Walking Workout.

Towards rhythm and beauty ...
Lent has a rhythm of its own and there is beauty in the sobriety of the season.

***
I am thankful for ...
"normal" Sundays--the kind where Dad is home and not traveling for work or soccer. We had one of those rare treats yesterday. It felt like a vacation (and I worked here at home all day).
***
From the kitchen ...
The Lenten menu plan is up at Kitchen Comforts. I'll link to recipes today (or I'll get Mary Beth to work on it. I'll update here when I've finished--thanks for all your interest. It's fun to brainstorm and share with all of you!)

***
I am wearing ...
black knit pants, a white tee shirt with a pink cardigan, pink pearl earrings and my St. Anne medal necklace. Well, actually, not yet--but I will be after I workout.

I am creating ...
a Lenten prayer corner.

Towards a real education ...
I do apologize! I went to link to the Westward Expansion booklist and realized I never published it. Check back on that later today (blushing furiously and claiming baby brain. We've been using it all along--I just forgot to hit "publish."
***
Bringing beauty to my home ...
I am always inspired to deep clean and ce-clutter during Lent. It never fails. This year will be a bit challenging, I think, becaue this baby truly wants me to hold her 24/7--but I'll mddle through as best I can and let you know if I discover anything interesting or inspiring along the way.
