Outside My Window ...
it's pouring and thundering and completely washing away all my plans for planting the vegetable garden today. It's was a hot, humid weekend--the kind of weather that makes Karoline's hair pull up into utterly adorable ringlets. Ringlets aside, I'm not so sure I love the return of sticky Washington, D.C. summer.

To Live the Liturgy...
Today is all about our novena to St. Philip Neri as we await Colleen's baby news and the addition to the Louisiana  band of brothers . Unless I missed some news while I was away, my friend Marilyn will welcome a little girl today, too.

We'll celebrate Pentecost in a church on the road.

To Fit and Happy...
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I heard this song on the radio while driving Patrick soccer last week. I'm pretty sure my husband wrote it;-). Sounds just like him.

I am thankful for...
ice cold waters bottles, sunscreen, the kind lady who lent me her umbrella to shade Sarah Anne, strollers that can be heaped with all sorts of stuff, a gallon bag of fruit salad, cotton t-shirts, bug spray, and
my Ergo.
I am ever so grateful for my Ergo.

Michael's home this week. He is spending the summer in Salt Lake City, training with Salt Lake's professional soccer team, but he came back to coach last weekend and this weekend, as Paddy's team advances to the Sate Cup Final four. So, this week will be all about feeding hungry athletes. Despite the rain, someone will have to make a grocery run today. For breakfast, I'm thinking baked oatmeal.

Lists of what to pack for the people going with us this weekend.
Lists for the people left at home.
Lists of Mass times and locations in Williamsburg.
Lists of what to see at Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg.
Lists of cooler food.
Lists of directions to fields and hotels and restaurants.
Lots and lots of lists.

we listened to it to and from games last weekend. Most of what I've downloaded at Audible.com is too advanced for my little ones. For the coming weekend, I think I'm going to hit storynory.com for Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling. If you have good source for books on audio for kids--especially stories that span the ages well, please leave a link in the comments.

Towards a real education ...
I have a short three days this week between tournaments. When I awakened Paddy yesterday, I told him that all he had to do was push through one more game (he'd already played four in the previous two days) and he had a trophy waiting for him. He moaned, rolled over, and mumbled that he already had a room full of trophies; he just wanted to sleep. He finally rallied (and he did collect the championship) and I promised him he could sleep for the next three days. Truth is, everyone is exhausted and I need these days to collect myself and take this show on the road.

I am thinking...
That it is utterly adorable that Katie and Karoline have decided to build fairy houses at every athletic complex we visit, sometimes leaving two or three houses near the fields. Five new homes were added to the fairy real estate collection last weekend.

Sarah Anne this week...
Despite much shade and sunscreen, Sarah Annie got a little sun this weekend. Her skin no longer has that luminous porcelain look. She's still a little cherub, but she's definitely lost the angelic newborn glow.

On Keeping Home ...
Despite the fact that I was ready to fall over yesterday afternoon I was so hot oand tired, I rallied to make the house presentable before Michael's girlfriend dropped by last night. I never would have pushed like that had it not been for the threat promise of company. I am glad I did. There's still much work to be done, however. For today, we still have to dig out of pockets of weekend dump-and-run. The van needs a total overhaul. It smells like a locker room, among other things. There's laundry to happen so we can begin to pack. The trick right now, isn't so much keeping home, but thinking ahead enough to know what parts of home to take in order to make this trip successful all the way around.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
I'm in super organizing mode for the next three days. The veggies will be planted tomorrow. Hopefully, the roses will arrive before I have to leave so that I can plant those, too. Michael and I will head out with a van full on Friday morning, very early. We're going to Williamsburg for a soccer weekend, bookended with historical field trips.

lots going on at Serendipity this week. The Africa plans are up. Writing workshops and Shakespeare and bedtime story lists are soon to follow. That's virtual. In the real life learning room, every is sort of scampering down their own path waiting for me to head into the official summer learning mode. I saw a lot of beeswax happening today--both the coloring and the sculpting kind. Christian and I spent the last week learning first aid and CPR and cramming for the lifesaving exam.  Once upon a time I taught that class. We never had to worry about OSHA regs and AIDS. Life really was simpler. Now he has just learned all about tax forms and paycheck deductions. He wants to know if he qualifies for a stimulus check.  He's got himself a summer job:-)

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
Those flower beds will be planted by week's end. All will be drawn and photo graphed for both print and virtual nature journals. Vegetables and herbs will go in shortly after that. Christian starts his new job as a lifeguard at the neighborhood pool. Stephen and Patrick are both playing the same soccer tournament--in very different towns. There's a strawberry farm near Stephen's site, so we gong to try to do some picking. And if we do, there will be jam and pie, for sure!

[We've dusted off the learning journal. It's time to focus and this worked for me last time. Of course, today was to be the first day and I didn't get to it. Hope springs eternal.]

That's last week's note. I'm still tweaking there. I'll let you know here when we go live.

Mary Beth continues to write Alphabet Path stories.

We began a Shakespeare study last week. I'd planned to do some Shakespeare this summer anyway, but Nicholas was insistent upon reading Romeo and Juliet immediately since he didn't understand Taylor Swift's Love Story. We read the Bruce Coville version and he's suddenly a big fan of Will. Inspired by Katherine's main lesson books, I think we're going to create some Shakespeare ones here. I've dug up Michael's old one and recognized anew what treasures these become.

Bringing beauty to my home ...
There are fresh flowers in several vases following Mother's Day. Michael sent an enormous bunch of tulips. All the little boys on Stephen's soccer team presented roses to the mothers after yesterday's game. I've  got a lovely bouquet of freshly-picked dandelions gathered by Katie and Karoline at soccer yesterday. The peonies look just about ready to burst into bloom. I like my chances of having roses from our garden soon after. The house will be filled with flowers from now until October...

On Keeping Home ...
I am very serious about implementing the seven point plan, adapted for the Foss Family. we had huge success with this last week. I've tweaked quite a bit and I'm keeping careful notes (even the engineer homemakers would be proud). Firstly, I learned that doing a load of laundry a day would guarantee that I'd be behind by about ten loads by week's end. Clearly, this plan needs some altering. Also, I'm having some difficulty persuading the dog to clean up after himself, so I've built some vacuuming into the daily round. More on this later.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:

Lots of baseball as we try to catch up from all the rainouts. My mom will be in town at the end of the week. Hopefully we'll return to our nature study place with some friends on Friday. We didn't go last Friday because I just wasn't up for the mud. Instead, we visited all the baby animals at Frying Pan Park. Need to post those pictures. Last count, the calendar proclaims five soccer practices on the agenda, a soccer fundraiser Saturday night (feel free to come keep me company--I'd LOVE it), ballet rehearsals this weekend. Oh, and "school" to do, too.

My friend Linda organized my children to celebrate "Diagnosis Day." She and Mary Beth conspired to make it a celebration day this year. It's always been a pretty personal day for me. And usually I end up  Googling things like recurrence statistics and mortality statistics (I didn't this year). But my kids made me cards and a paper chain with my blessings listed inside each rung.Paddy came through with candy.  Some faithful friends sent lovely notes and Linda sent tulips. I feel like I've already celebrated Mother's Day.

My Heart's at Home Daybook~The Last Week of April

To Live the Liturgy...
I learned something interesting when I was making plans for living liturgy this week. As I have shared before, I tend to struggle with post traumatic stress, particularly during the last week in April, when the blooming tulips remind me of a hospital . The Feast of St. Catherine of Siena is April 29th. That day tends to loom large for me, as it was the day I was diagnosed with cancer. She is the patron of sickness, sick people, bodily ills, nurses, and even miscarriage. I'll think we'll stop to celebrate her on Wednesday.
And then, it's St. Joseph's feast again on May 1st. I've been praying this novena with Kristen. I think that prayer to St. Joseph is going to be part of our daily repertoire. If I keep devotional prayers to saints to as part of daily prayers at the current rate, we're going to need to add another prayer hour to the day;-)

***
To Fit and Happy...
Lots more "real life" walking and carrying this week! I feel like I'm fully back into regular range of movements, though certainly my body still looks like a woman had a ninth baby at 42 and is still baby's sole source of nutrition;-). I carried that baby to three different soccer fields, a baseball game and a basketball court last weekend and spent a whole lot of time walking around playing fields with her in a sling. At one point, while pushing baby in stroller, I lifted Karoline onto my shoulders. This was not the wisest thing to do, but I could do it--so there's that.

Towards a real education ...
I'm having some interesting conversations with my daughter. At twelve, she's becoming quite the Montessori purist. I love Montessori, but I'm not a purist. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and shelves of books both from my time in school and since. I am passionate about Early Childhood Education. I'm passionate about literature-based education. In my mind, Montessori isn't literary enough. For all its good, there is a need for more living books--lots more living books.Pure Montessori--Montessori as Maria Montessori wrote it--doesn't benefit from the explosion in children's printing since the 19th century. Dr. Montessori didn't have the treasure of beautiful, full color picture books that we do. I wonder what she would have done, if she'd had access to those books yet to be written and illustrated.
Mary Beth is hooked on Montessori books and blogs. I suggested she read some other books; say Real Learning perhaps?:-) Nope, she's found educational perfection. Suddenly, there are two teachers in the learning room and one of them is very idealistic;-). On the other hand, she's bringing a breath of fresh air to this "school" that's been in the business of educating little people more than twenty years.
***
Bringing beauty to my home ...
this time of year always makes me want to redecorate. I want to paint all the walls a soft wash (Waldorfs walls, anyone?) and replace all the fabrics with Heather Bailey pinks.
This year the urge is irresistible. I will redo a room around these beautiful photos of my favorite people in my favorite place. Mike and I are actually working on a plan for this. And Michael has opinions, as he always does when the discussion focuses on art and photography. Good rabbit trail, this one.

While I appreciate the beauty, the materials and some of the methods of Waldorf education, I am not a follower of Rudolf Steiner, his educational philosophy, or his religion. I am a practicing Catholic who is very clear in teaching the faith to her children. Please see this post for any further explanation of incorporating methods or materials that might also appear in Waldorf schools into your home. Take inspiration from what is good and what in in harmony with the true faith and leave the rest. If you can't discern, then leave it all alone.
