Nicholas was assigned the task of vacuuming the stairs in the late afternoon.  This is the time of day when the sun streams through the foyer window, catching all the dust with its light.  As Nicky was vacuuming, he noticed the dust floating in the air and figured he'd be a bit pro-active!
